For a few days leading up to the Newsday, Ben and I had sent each other story ideas, however, the ideas remained loose. Our initial strongest idea was regarding local businesses and their preparations for Halloween. This story did not work out, however, since another group had already given the Halloween idea in the morning discussion before we had a chance to give it. Ben and I were able to devise a story about the snap election which had just been announced, our spin was the concerns raised with it being a December election since I had already heard news outlets refer to it as the first one in a century and I had wondered why.
The story seemed solid enough and our decision to write an explainer piece gave us a bit more confidence moving forward. This confidence was quickly quashed after eight academics and five local MPs refused to give us statements, essentially voiding us of strong primary sources for the writing piece or the audio.
Our vox pops went surprisingly well considering my terrible experiences with them in the past and I was rather proud of the variety of voices and opinions we received.
Our aim for next week is to come up with a concrete story idea before the day and come with sources and material prepared.
